1. Preparation

Good preparation ensures a smooth end result.

  • Allow the PVC to acclimatise in the room (18–20 °C) for at least 24 hours .

  • Completely remove old upholstery and adhesive residue.

  • Sand the steps smooth and vacuum thoroughly.

  • Then degrease all surfaces.

  • For a new-build staircase: leave the staircase for a few weeks to prevent any possible movement.

  • Optional: pre-finish the undersides of the steps with paint.

2. Customizing PVC

Straight steps

  1. Cut the strip to length.

  2. Place it on the step and mark the outer edges.

  3. Cut to size with a sharp hobby knife.

Twisting or uneven steps

Use a trap spider :

  1. Measure the shape of the step accurately.

  2. Trace this onto the PVC strip.

  3. Cut smoothly and evenly for a neat cutting line.

Bumpers

  • Measure the height and width.

  • Cut to size exactly for a tight fit.

Profiles

  • Cut the profile to size with a hacksaw.

  • Make an extra PVC strip that fits exactly under the profile.

3. Gluing and mounting

Always use double-sided adhesive for maximum adhesion:

  1. Apply PVC glue to both the step/riser and the back of the PVC strip.

  2. Let the glue dry for about 30 minutes until it is touch dry (finger test).

  3. First place the step strip and press firmly.

  4. Then install the bumper.

  5. Place the profile and screw it down.

  6. Click or glue the profile strip into the profile.

Repeat this for each step.
