What do you need?

  • Stair tread template

  • Utility or Stanley knife

  • PVC glue (Co-pro recommended)

  • Marking pencil

  • Orbital sander

  • Hacksaw

  • Screwdriver / cordless drill

  • Optional: painter's tape and cleaning cloths

1. Preparation

Good preparation ensures a neat final result.

  • Allow the PVC to acclimatize for at least 24 hours in the room (18–20 °C).

  • Completely remove old coverings and adhesive residues.

  • Sand the treads smooth and vacuum thoroughly.

  • Then degrease all surfaces.

  • For a new build staircase: leave the stairs for a few weeks to prevent any movement.

  • Optional: pre-finish the undersides of the treads with paint.

2. Customizing PVC

Straight treads

  1. Cut the strip to length.

  2. Place it on the tread and mark the outer edges.

  3. Cut to size with a sharp utility knife.

Winding or uneven treads

Use a stair tread template:

  1. Accurately measure the shape of the tread.

  2. Transfer this to the PVC strip.

  3. Cut slowly and evenly for a clean cut line.

Risers

  • Measure height and width.

  • Cut to exact size for a tight fit.

Profiles

  • Saw the profile to size with a hacksaw.

  • Create an extra PVC strip that fits exactly under the profile.

3. Gluing and assembly

Always use double-sided adhesion for maximum bonding:

  1. Apply PVC glue to both the tread / riser and the back of the PVC strip.

  2. Allow the glue to dry for approx. 30 minutes until it is touch dry (finger test).

  3. First, place the tread strip, press firmly.

  4. Then mount the riser.

  5. Place the profile and screw it in place.

  6. Click or glue the profile strip into the profile.

Repeat this for each step.
